Board Updates

First of all,  I would like to thank the previous board members for their service to the community.  Tom Galvin and Lori Tomkewitz were the first residents to volunteer for the thankless job of managing the community affairs.  They both served the community by spending countless hours in meetings, with attorneys, reviewing documents, and planning for the upkeep and improvement of the community for over two years.  Patrick Magallanes used his business experience to assist last year's board to draft the first projected budget and a five year plan.  Patrick, through the company he started called Yardvarks, provided a substantial amount of landscape improvement at cost.  Bonnie Simonick served as the community's first secretary.  She helped the HOA establish, for the first time, a system of orderly and accurate record keeping.  Thank you to all four of these brave souls for their service to our community.

Secondly, I would like to thank the two new members of the board for being courageous enough, and foolish enough, to take on these responsibilities.  Dewayne Nelson, of Texas Point, and Georg'a Walsh, of Walder Trail, will make a valuable addition to the board.  Our first meeting is scheduled for the month of October, during which we will decide who takes which position and who takes which duration of term of service.

Our mission in the coming year will be service to the community.  We hope to accomplish this goal by being available for constructive criticism and new ideas.  Also, we plan to continue the beautification of the common areas and the entrance and bring The Overlook to a point at which we will all be proud to say, "I live there."

NEISD Reports Above-Average Number of SAT Takers & Scores

North East Independent School District continues to see an increase in the amount of students taking the SAT I Reasoning Test as well as scores that fall above state's average mean.  The College Board reported that 2,174 students in North East ISD took the SAT I Reasoning Test for the 2001-2002 school year, an increase from 1,969 students who tested the previous year.  This year's number of test takers includes 72 percent of the seniors in the district.  North East students from the 2001-2002 school year attained a composite score of 1017 with an average mean of 510 on the Verbal and 507 on the Math section.

These average scores are higher than the state's mean scores of 491 in Verbal, a decrease of two points, and 500 in Math, an increase of one point, for a composite score of 991.  Additionally, North East saw an increase in the percentage of minority test takers reaching an all-time high of 44 percent, an increase of 3 percent from last year.

Officer Warns Overlook About Garage Theft

When speaking at the Annual Homeowner's Meeting, SAPD Officer Andrew Camplen warned community members that a large part of burglary and theft in our area is due to people leaving their garage doors open.  Thieves are able to slip in and out quickly, removing golf clubs, tools, and other items from open garages.  Please be mindful of this and remember to close your garage doors.
