Safety and Security Issues Arise in The Overlook

Early last Tuesday morning, an Overlook resident had a vehicle burglarized.  The thieves made off with a purse, containing some treasured family photos.  This unfortunate event has brought Overlook security into the forefront.  The Board of Directors has placed Colleen Douglas, of Texas Point, in charge of organizing our community security.  Mrs. Douglas has had vast experience in previous neighborhoods, and has even been decorated by the mayor for her efforts.  Mrs. Douglas is working to get our community involved in the COP (Cellular On Patrol) program.  She needs roughly 10 people who interested in taking an 8 hour training session (which includes a patrol car ride-along).  We can then organize a patrol program, in which we can take an active role in keeping crime out of our community.  By taking the class and joining the program, we will have a direct line to a specific officer, designated to our area.  See below for more details.

The central core of SAPD's Community Policing activities is the SAFFE (San Antonio Fear Free Environment) Unit. First established in 1994-95 with 60 officers and supervisors, then enlarged in 1996 with an additional 40 officers, the SAFFE Unit consists of officers who focus on identifying, evaluating and resolving community crime problems with the cooperation and participation of community residents. Beginning in 2000, an additional 10 SAFFE officers will be added each year for five years.

SAFFE officers are assigned to specific areas or neighborhoods within the city, and work closely with both residents and the district patrol officers also assigned to those areas. SAFFE officers establish and maintain day-to-day interaction with residents and businesses within their assigned beats, in order to prevent crimes before they happen. SAFFE officers also act as liaisons with other city agencies, work closely with schools and youth programs, coordinate graffiti-removal activities, and serve as resources to residents who wish to take back their neighborhoods from crime and decay.

Anyone interested in learning more about the program or signing up for the class can contact Colleen Douglas at geoffncolleen@earthlink.net .  The more folks that get involved with this program, the safer and more secure our community will be.

Annual Homeowners Meeting Held at Hardy Oak

The annual Overlook Homeowners Association Meeting was held Wednesday, September 25th, at Hardy Oak Elementary School.  The annual board of directors election was held; Georg'a Walsh, of Walder Trail, Dewayne Nelson, of Texas Point, and David Kennedy, of Walder Trail were elected as the three members of the board.  (The board of directors had been expanded to five members last year, under the advice of our ProComm representative.  However, the covenants were not duly amended to reflect this change, forcing the board of directors to return to three members).

SAPD Officer Andrew Camplen spoke to the community about the SAFFE (San Antonio Fear Free Environment) Program and the COP (Cellular on Patrol) Program.  (See next column for more details.)

Overlook Garage Sale

The fall version of the Overlook Garage Sale is Saturday, October 5th.  This sale is being held in conjunction with numerous surrounding neighborhoods, to help increase traffic and decrease expenditures.  The gate company will be notified to have the gates open from 8am until noon.
